God can weave everything, including hard things, toward good for those who love Him.
“And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.”Romans 8:28 (KJV)
What does “Working together” mean in Romans 8:28?
Paul does not say that all things are good. He says that all things work together for good, meaning that God is at work in and through them for those who love Him and are called by Him.
Going deeper
Paul writes, we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose. It is a comfort and it needs to be read carefully. Paul does not say that every event is good in itself. Some things are terrible. He says that God can weave even those into a larger good that fits His purpose. The promise is for those who love God, and it is about His purpose, which is bigger than our comfort.
This verse is best held with humility and patience. We may not see the good for a long time, or in this life. But we can trust that God is not wasting anything. Bring a painful situation to Him today and ask Him to work in it. You may not yet see how, but you can rest in His faithfulness. Trust that He is weaving something that will bring good, in His time and in His way.
