Remembering how God has led us in the past helps us trust Him for the future.
“And thou shalt remember all the way which the LORD thy God led thee these forty years in the wilderness, to humble thee, and to prove thee, to know what was in thine heart, whether thou wouldest keep his commandments, or no.”Deuteronomy 8:2 (KJV)
What does “Remember the way” mean in Deuteronomy 8:2?
Moses tells Israel to remember the whole forty-year journey in the wilderness. God had led them, tested them, and shown what was in their hearts, all for their good.
Going deeper
Moses told the people, thou shalt remember all the way which the LORD thy God led thee these forty years in the wilderness, to humble thee, and to prove thee, to know what was in thine heart. Remembering the whole way includes the hard parts. The wilderness was not wasted time. It humbled them, tested them, and taught them to depend on God. Looking back with understanding turns hardship into a lesson.
Take some time to look back over your own journey. Where has God led you? Include the difficult stretches. What did He teach you there? What did you learn about your own heart, and about His faithfulness? Write it down or share it with someone. Remembering builds gratitude and confidence. The God who led you then is the same God leading you now, and He will not stop. Gratitude grows in those who remember. Share your story with someone this week, so that they can be encouraged by what God has done, and so that you can hear yourself say it aloud.
Reflect
What part of your journey could you remember today, and what did God teach you in it?
Pray
Lord, help me to remember all the way You have led me. Thank You for teaching me in the wilderness, and help me to trust You for what is ahead. In Jesus' name, amen.
