Rest is a gift God made for us, not a burden He placed on us.
“And he said unto them, The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath:”Mark 2:27 (KJV)
What does “Sabbath” mean in Mark 2:27?
Jesus says this when religious leaders criticized His disciples for picking grain on the Sabbath. He reminds them that the day was made to serve people, giving them rest and joy.
Going deeper
The Pharisees had turned the Sabbath into a set of rules to be watched and enforced. Jesus answers, the sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath. God gave the day as a gift, a rhythm of rest and worship, for the good of His people. Rest is not laziness. It is trust. When we stop working, we are saying that God is in charge and that the world will carry on without us for a day.
Many of us struggle to rest, and our culture rewards constant work. Yet our bodies, our minds, and our relationships need it. Consider building a regular pattern of rest into your week, whether it is a full day or a few protected hours. Use it to worship, to enjoy people you love, and to do things that refresh you. Receive it as a gift, without guilt. God made rest for you, and He made it good.
Reflect
What regular rhythm of rest could you protect this week as a gift from God?
Pray
Lord, thank You for the gift of rest. Teach me to stop, to trust You, and to enjoy what You have made. In Jesus' name, amen.
