What does “Prayer” mean in 1 Thessalonians 5:17?
The Greek adialeiptos describes something that keeps recurring, like a cough that keeps coming back. It does not mean doing nothing else.
Going deeper
Paul is not asking for endless kneeling. He is describing a life that stays in conversation with God: short prayers of thanks, help, and trust in the middle of ordinary work. The verses around it say to rejoice evermore and in everything give thanks. Together they describe a rhythm. Jesus modeled it, withdrawing to pray alone and also praying in the moment.
