What does “Justice” mean in Isaiah 1:17?
The word judgment here translates the Hebrew mishpat, which means justice. The fatherless and the widow are those who have no one to speak for them.
Going deeper
Through Isaiah, God addresses people who were religious on the outside but careless about how they treated others. He tells them to stop offering empty worship and to start acting. Learn to do well, He says, and then He gives specifics: seek justice, help the oppressed, defend the fatherless, and plead for the widow. Real faith is not only about what we believe or sing. It shows in how we treat people who cannot repay us.
The list is a good guide for any generation, because there are always people who are overlooked, ignored, or taken advantage of. You do not need to solve every problem. Begin with the people near you. Who is going without a voice in your community? A single mother, an elderly neighbor, a child in a struggling school, or someone new to your city? Ask God to show you one person or one cause, and take one practical step this week to stand with them.
