God loves a giver whose heart is glad.
“Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver.”2 Corinthians 9:7 (KJV)
What does “Generosity” mean in 2 Corinthians 9:7?
The Greek word for cheerful is hilaros, the root of our word hilarious. It describes someone who gives with joy, not out of pressure or resentment.
Going deeper
Paul is encouraging the church in Corinth to help believers in need. He gives no percentage and issues no demand. He simply describes the attitude that pleases God. Each person should decide in their heart what to give, and then give without grudging or a sense of compulsion. The heart matters more than the amount. God is not impressed by a large gift given reluctantly, and He is delighted by a small gift given gladly.
That takes the pressure off and puts the focus where it belongs. Generosity is not only about money. It can be time, attention, hospitality, or skill. What is one thing you could give this week with a glad heart? Perhaps you could pay for a meal, help a neighbor with a task, or set aside a portion for someone in need. Ask God to make your giving joyful rather than dutiful, and notice how giving can be one of the great pleasures of the Christian life.
