What does “Mercy” mean in Matthew 5:7?
The Greek word for merciful describes someone who shows active compassion toward people in need. Jesus says the merciful are blessed, meaning they are deeply favored by God.
Going deeper
This is one of the Beatitudes, the opening lines of the Sermon on the Mount, where Jesus describes the kind of people who are truly blessed. They are not the powerful or the successful. They are the poor in spirit, the meek, the peacemakers, and here, the merciful. Mercy means treating people with kindness that they have not earned, especially when they are in need or have failed.
The promise in the verse is that mercy comes back to those who give it. That is not a bargain we make with God, since we can never earn His mercy. It is a description of how mercy works. Hearts that have received mercy learn to give it, and those who give it find it easier to receive. Who around you needs mercy this week? It might be someone who has made a mistake, or someone who is difficult. Choose grace over judgment, and see what God does.
