The need is great, and God invites us to pray for workers and to be ready to go.
“Then saith he unto his disciples, The harvest truly is plenteous, but the labourers are few; Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he will send forth labourers into his harvest.”Matthew 9:37-38 (KJV)
What does “Harvest” mean in Matthew 9:37-38?
Jesus speaks of a harvest that is plentiful and laborers who are few. The Greek word for laborers describes workers who do the actual work in the field.
Going deeper
Matthew tells us that Jesus looked at the crowds and was moved with compassion, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. Then He turned to His disciples and described what He saw as a ripe harvest. The people are ready, but the workers are few. His instruction is not to organize a campaign but to pray. Pray that the Lord of the harvest will send out workers.
There is a twist in the story. In the very next chapter, Jesus sends out the same disciples who were asked to pray. Prayer and action are joined. When we pray for workers, we may find that we are the answer. Look around at your neighbors and your community, and see them as Jesus did, with compassion. Pray for the people in your reach by name, and ask God whether He might want to send you. Compassion first, then prayer, then action: that is the order Jesus follows.

Who around you seems like sheep without a shepherd, and how could you pray for them and reach out?

Lord of the harvest, give me Your compassion for the people around me. Send out workers, and use me to reach those who need You. In Jesus' name, amen.
