Real change begins with the renewing of the mind.
“And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.”Romans 12:2 (KJV)
What does “Renewal” mean in Romans 12:2?
The Greek word for transformed is metamorphoo, from which we get metamorphosis. It describes a deep change from the inside, like a caterpillar becoming a butterfly.
Going deeper
Paul begins the practical section of his letter to the Romans with this verse. He warns against being squeezed into the mold of the world around us, and he offers a better way, transformation through the renewing of the mind. Notice that the change is not achieved by rules alone. It grows as our thinking is renewed by God's truth, day by day.
What we take in shapes what we become. If we spend our days absorbing worry, cynicism, and noise, those will shape us. If we feed on Scripture, prayer, and wise counsel, our minds will begin to think differently, and our choices will follow. The end goal is that we may discover God's good, acceptable, and perfect will. Consider what fills your mind most. Choose one small change this week, such as a few verses each morning, and let God begin to renew your thinking. Renewal is slow, and it is real.
