The Holy Spirit gives us power to be witnesses wherever we are.
“But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.”Acts 1:8 (KJV)
What does “Witness” mean in Acts 1:8?
The Greek word for witness is martys, someone who tells what they have seen and experienced. The power promised here is the Holy Spirit's own strength, given to make that witness possible.
Going deeper
These are among the last words Jesus spoke on earth before ascending to heaven. He does not give His disciples a task without a promise. They will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on them, and they will be His witnesses. Notice the widening circles: Jerusalem, Judaea, Samaria, and the ends of the earth. It begins at home and moves outward, and the same pattern applies to us.
Being a witness does not require being an expert. A witness simply tells what they have seen and heard. You can share what God has done in your life, how He has helped you, and what you have learned about Him. The Spirit supplies the courage and the words. Think about your own Jerusalem, the people you see every day. Who might be waiting to hear your story? Ask the Holy Spirit to fill you and to open a door this week.
