Jesus gives a peace that is different from anything the world offers.
“Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.”John 14:27 (KJV)
What does “Given peace” mean in John 14:27?
Peace here echoes the Hebrew shalom, wholeness and well-being. Jesus says His peace is a gift, and He contrasts it with the way the world gives.
Going deeper
In the same conversation, Jesus leaves His friends a gift: peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. The world's peace depends on circumstances. It fades when trouble comes. Jesus' peace is a settled calm that comes from His presence, and it holds even in trouble. He gives it, and He gives it freely. It is a legacy He leaves to every follower.
Then He repeats His earlier instruction: let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. That phrase suggests we have a part. We can choose to lean toward trust, and refuse to let fear set up house in our hearts. Ask Him today for the peace He promised, and receive it by faith, even before you feel it. Then notice how that peace touches your reactions, your words, and the way you treat others.
