Jesus promised a Helper who would stay with us forever, the Spirit of truth.
“And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.”John 14:16-17 (KJV)
What does “Comforter” mean in John 14:16-17?
The Greek word parakletos, translated Comforter, means one called alongside to help. Jesus says the Spirit will abide with us and even be in us.
Going deeper
Jesus knew His disciples would be afraid when He left, so He made a promise. I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever. The word another means another of the same kind. The Spirit would be to them what Jesus had been: a companion, teacher, and helper. And Jesus adds that the Spirit will not only be with them but in them.
This promise looks ahead to Pentecost, which is just around the corner. It also speaks to us now. You are not left to live the Christian life by your own resources. The Holy Spirit is a present help, given to guide, comfort, and strengthen. If you feel alone or unequipped today, ask Him for help by name. You may be surprised by how near He is. Then take the next step, trusting that He goes with you.
