Jesus calls us friends, and He shares His heart with us.
“Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you.”John 15:15 (KJV)
What does “Friends” mean in John 15:15?
A servant follows orders without knowing the reasons, but a friend is told what the master is doing. Jesus says He has made known to His disciples everything He heard from the Father.
Going deeper
It is astonishing that Jesus, the Lord of all, would say to His followers, henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends. A friend is someone who is trusted with what is on your heart. Jesus tells them that all things that He has heard of the Father He has made known to them. He has held nothing back. This is the language of closeness.
Friendship with Jesus does not make Him less our Lord. Just before this, He says that His friends are those who do whatsoever He commands. But it changes our motive. We obey out of love and trust, not fear. Take a moment today to think of Jesus as a friend. Tell Him what is on your mind, the way you would to a person who cares. Listen also, for a friend speaks back. He delights in your company.
