Jesus wants His joy to remain in us and our joy to be full.
“These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full.”John 15:11 (KJV)
What does “Full joy” mean in John 15:11?
Jesus speaks of His own joy, not just ours, and says He wants it to remain in His followers. The word full means completed, with nothing lacking.
Going deeper
Jesus says all these things about abiding, loving, and obeying for a reason: these things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full. It is remarkable that He speaks of His own joy. He is not an unhappy teacher trying to make people miserable. He is joyful, and He wants to share that joy with those who follow Him.
Joy in this sense is not the same as constant cheerfulness. It is a deep gladness rooted in knowing we are loved and belong to Him. It can coexist with sorrow. Ask yourself where your joy has drained away, and what has crowded out time with Jesus. The joy He offers grows as we remain close to Him. Take a small step today to spend time in His presence, and let His joy find a place in your heart. Joy is His gift to give.
