What does “Bountiful sowing” mean in 2 Corinthians 9:6?

Paul uses a farming image: the one who sows sparingly reaps sparingly, and the one who sows generously reaps generously. He is encouraging the Corinthians to be generous in giving toward believers in need.

Paul writes, He which soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly; and he which soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully. It is a principle from farming. A few seeds give a small harvest, and many seeds give a larger one. Paul applies it to giving. This is not a promise of riches. In context, the harvest includes joy, thanksgiving to God, and the meeting of others' needs. Generosity produces good fruit in many forms.

Notice how the giving is measured by the heart, not the amount. Ask yourself if you have been sowing sparingly out of fear. Where could you be more generous this week: with money, time, or attention? Give thoughtfully and cheerfully, as the next verse says. Trust God with the results, and enjoy the good that comes. Sowing bountifully is one of the ways we serve the world and share in what God is doing. Give with joy, and let Him handle the harvest.
