The Spirit of truth leads us step by step into all truth.
“Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.”John 16:13 (KJV)
What does “Guide” mean in John 16:13?
The Greek word for guide means to lead along the way, like a person who walks the road with you. Jesus says the Spirit of truth will lead the disciples into all truth.
Going deeper
Jesus said many things to His disciples that they could not yet bear, and He promised that the Holy Spirit would continue the teaching. Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth. The Spirit does not push or drag. He guides, walking alongside. And notice what He does not do: for he shall not speak of himself. The Spirit points to Christ, not to Himself.
This is a comfort for anyone who feels unsure how to understand the Bible or how to make a decision. You are not on your own. Ask the Spirit for guidance as you read and pray. Then look for confirmation in Scripture and in the wisdom of mature believers. The Spirit leads into truth, and truth always fits together. Take a step today in the light you have, and trust Him to show you the way as you go.
