Jesus often draws near to us when we are talking and troubled, before we recognize Him.
“And it came to pass, that, while they communed together and reasoned, Jesus himself drew near, and went with them.”Luke 24:15 (KJV)
What does “Drew near” mean in Luke 24:15?
Two travelers were walking from Jerusalem to Emmaus, discussing all that had happened. Luke says that Jesus Himself drew near and went with them, though they did not yet know who He was.
Going deeper
On the afternoon of the first Easter, two disciples were walking home, heavy with sadness and confusion. They talked and reasoned about the events of the past few days. Then Jesus Himself came alongside them. He did not announce Himself, and He did not correct them right away. He walked with them, listened to their story, and asked questions. The risen Lord entered their conversation at the very place they were struggling.
This tells us something about how He meets us. We may be wrestling with disappointment, doubt, or grief, and we may not sense His presence at all. Yet He may already be walking beside us. Luke says that their eyes were kept from recognizing Him for a time, and that recognition came later. Trust that He is nearer than He feels. Speak honestly to Him today about what has been troubling you, and ask Him to open your eyes to how He is already at work.

Lord Jesus, thank You for drawing near when I am sad and confused. Open my eyes to Your presence, and walk with me today. In Jesus' name, amen.
