Remember what God has done, and let gladness rise.

What does “Gladness” mean in Psalm 126:3?
The psalmist looks back on what God has done and responds with gladness. Great things here means real acts of rescue that the whole community had seen.
Going deeper
Psalm 126 belongs to a group of songs pilgrims sang on their way up to Jerusalem. This one remembers a time when God brought His people home from captivity, and it says they were like people who dream. The gladness in verse three is simple and direct: the LORD did great things, and we are glad. The psalm does not hurry to add caveats.
Gladness often begins with remembering. In Advent we remember the great things God has done, and we can also remember what He has done in our own lives. Think back over this year. Where did He provide, protect, or surprise you? Write down three things. Sharing them with your family or a friend makes them stronger. Gladness grows when it is spoken. The psalm goes on to ask for more of God's work, but it starts by saying thank you for what He has already done.

Lord, You have done great things for us, and I am glad. Remind me of Your goodness, and let my thanks be spoken out loud. In Jesus' name, amen.
