God delights in His people so much that He sings over them.

What does “Singing” mean in Zephaniah 3:17?
In the midst of thee means God is right there among His people. The verse says He rejoices over them and sings, which shows His delight and not only His power.
Going deeper
Most of us think of God's power more easily than His delight. This verse holds both. He is mighty, and He will save, and He also rejoices over His people with singing. Zephaniah wrote to a people who needed to hear this, since much of the book speaks of judgment. In the last chapter the message turns, and God is described as a mighty one who saves and who rejoices with a song.
It is worth sitting quietly with the picture. The One who made everything sings over you. Not over a version of you that is finally perfect, but over you. Many people struggle to believe they are loved by God, and this verse pushes back on that. As you sing carols this season, remember that the singing goes both ways. We sing to Him, and He sings over us. Let that settle into your heart today, and then let it come out as gladness toward others.
