This psalm is full of longing and sadness, and yet it carries a note of hope: Yet the LORD will command his lovingkindness in the day time, and in the night his song shall be with me, and my prayer unto the God of my life. The word yet turns the corner. Whatever the mood, God's lovingkindness is still at work, and a song can rise in the darkest hours. It may be quiet, but it is real.
Night can be literal, when worries keep us awake, or it can be a season of grief or confusion. In such times, a simple song or a line of Scripture can be a companion. Try keeping a hymn or a verse ready for the hard hours. Hum it, pray it, or whisper it. You are not required to feel cheerful. You are simply letting God's song be with you until the morning comes.
