He is reminding us that life is short, and that the ordinary tasks in front of us are our opportunity. The verse is not only about big projects. It applies to washing dishes, preparing a lesson, caring for a parent, and finishing a report. Whatever is in your hand deserves your attention.
This ties nicely with Paul's word that we work as for the Lord. Effort is a form of respect, both for God and for the people we serve. Consider what has been in your hand that you have been doing halfheartedly. It may be a task at work, a habit of prayer, or a relationship that you have neglected. Give it your full attention today. You may find that focus and energy return when you decide to do the next thing well.
