What does “Trust” mean in Proverbs 3:5?
The Hebrew word is batach, to trust by feeling secure enough to put your full weight on something. The phrase lean not uses sha'an, to prop yourself on a support.
Going deeper
The verse sets two supports side by side: the LORD and our own understanding. Understanding is not the enemy, since God gave us minds. The problem comes when we make it the final authority while the path is unclear. All thine heart calls for complete reliance, not a share of it. Verse 6 follows with the promise that when we acknowledge Him in all our ways, He directs our paths.
