Jesus came to serve, and He calls us to do the same.

What does “Servant” mean in Mark 10:45?
The Greek word for minister is diakoneo, which means to serve, like a table servant. A ransom is the price paid to set a captive free.

James and John had just asked Jesus for places of honor in His kingdom, and the other disciples were annoyed. Jesus used the moment to turn their idea of greatness upside down. In the world, leaders are served. In His kingdom, the greatest are those who serve. And He pointed to His own life as the example: the Son of Man came not to be served, but to serve and to give His life as a ransom for many.
If Jesus, the Lord of all, came to serve, then serving is not beneath us. It is the way of the kingdom. Service can be humble and hidden. It may be washing dishes at a church event, helping a neighbor with yard work, or listening to someone who is hurting. Look for a place this week where you can serve without needing recognition. In serving others, we are following the footsteps of Christ.
