Jesus restored Peter with three gentle questions, and He gave him a task.

What does “Restored” mean in John 21:17?
Jesus asks Peter three times if he loves Him, matching the three times Peter had denied knowing Him. Each time, Peter's answer is followed by a commission to care for Jesus' people.
Going deeper
Peter had denied Jesus three times on the night of His arrest, and he must have carried that failure heavily. On the shore of Galilee, Jesus meets him by a fire and asks a simple question three times: lovest thou me? By the third, Peter is grieved. Yet Jesus never brings up the denial directly. He gives Peter the chance to say, Lord, thou knowest all things; thou knowest that I love thee. Then He says, feed my sheep.
This is what restoration looks like. There is no lecture and no long probation. There is honest speaking, forgiveness, and a renewed calling. If you have failed in a way that makes you feel unfit, this story is for you. Jesus does not discard those who fall. He restores them and entrusts them with work that matters. Tell Him plainly that you love Him, and listen for what He asks you to do next.
