What does “Ponder” mean in Luke 2:19?
The Greek word for pondered means to put together, to turn over in the mind. Mary does not rush to explain what has happened. She holds it and thinks about it.
Going deeper
After the shepherds told what the angels had said, everyone was amazed. Mary's response is different. She keeps these things and thinks deeply about them. Luke tells us she treasured what she had seen and heard, and that quiet attention is part of how faith grows. Not everything God does needs to be talked about immediately. Her stillness was not passivity. It was attention.
In a season full of noise and activity, Mary's example offers a valuable rhythm. Some moments deserve reflection. Consider taking a few minutes today, perhaps before others wake or after they have gone to bed, and thinking back over the year. What has God done that you have not had time to consider? What questions are you carrying? Write down a few thoughts, or simply sit in the quiet. Pondering is not idle. It is how wonder deepens into trust. Give yourself permission to slow down, even for a few moments.
