The Prince of Peace came as a child, and He still brings peace to the troubled.
“For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.”Isaiah 9:6 (KJV)
What does “Peace” mean in Isaiah 9:6?
The Hebrew word for peace is shalom, which means wholeness and well-being, not only quiet. The title Prince of Peace describes a ruler who brings that wholeness.
Going deeper
Isaiah gives the coming child several names, and each one describes what He is like. He is wonderful in what He does, a counselor in what He says, mighty as God, and everlasting as a Father to His people. The last name is the one many of us reach for in a noisy season: Prince of Peace. Real peace is more than the absence of conflict. It is the presence of what is right and whole.
It is striking that the verse says a child is born, and that government rests on His shoulder. The ruler of everything came in weakness. That tells us where peace begins: not with force, but with a gift. Peace with God comes first, and it makes peace with others possible.
