The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness cannot put it out.

What does “Life” mean in John 1:4-5?
The Greek word for comprehended is katalambano, which can mean to grasp or to overcome. Either way, the darkness did not defeat the light.

John describes Christ in words that echo the first chapter of Genesis. In the beginning, God spoke light into the darkness. Now, John says, the same Word carries life and light for humanity. The verse is written in the present tense: the light shineth. It is still shining. The darkness has been trying for a long time, and it has not managed to put the light out.
Many people face dark seasons after Christmas, as the busyness ends and hard realities return. This verse offers steady comfort. Darkness does not have the power to overcome what God has started. The light does not depend on how bright the room already is. It shines because of who He is. If you are in a shadowed place, turn toward the light and take one small step. You might read a psalm, call a friend, or step outside into the daylight. The light is already there.
