Praying for everyone, including those in authority, is one of the church's first duties.

What does “Intercession” mean in 1 Timothy 2:1-2?
Paul lists four kinds of prayer: supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgiving. He asks that they be made for all people, especially rulers, so that believers may live in peace.

And it includes kings, and for all that are in authority. Paul lived under rulers who were not friendly to the church, and still he asked for prayer for them. The purpose is that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty.
Prayer for leaders and neighbors is a way of serving the world. It does not require agreeing with everyone. It asks God for wisdom, justice, and peace for those who hold power over others. Make a short list today of people to pray for: local officials, a teacher, a boss, a leader you find difficult. Pray for them by name, and include thanks. This is a service open to everyone, and it shapes the kind of society we live in.
