God calls His people to stand up for the weak, the poor, and the needy.

What does “Defend” mean in Psalm 82:3-4?
The psalm pictures God calling rulers to account for how they treat the vulnerable. The commands are direct: defend, do justice, deliver, and rescue.

The psalm gives four commands in two verses. Defend the poor and fatherless: do justice to the afflicted and needy. And, Deliver the poor and needy: rid them out of the hand of the wicked. These are the things God cares about most. Notice how active the verbs are. Defending and delivering are not passive. They call for a willingness to step in and to act when others are being treated unfairly.
We may not be judges or rulers, but each of us has influence somewhere. It may be in a workplace, a school board, a neighborhood, or a church. Ask who is being treated unjustly around you, and what you could do. It might mean speaking up, helping someone navigate a system, or supporting an organization that defends the vulnerable. Take one concrete step this week to stand with someone who needs a defender. Speaking up for someone is a way of loving them. Start with one person and one act.
