What does “Good Shepherd” mean in John 10:11?

The Greek word for good here means genuine and beautiful, the kind of shepherd who truly cares. Jesus says that the good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep, and He says it before He does it.

Jesus used a picture His listeners knew well. A hired hand runs when the wolf comes, because the sheep are not his own. A true shepherd stays, even at cost to himself. I am the good shepherd, Jesus says: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep. He does not say that He would if necessary. He describes it as what a good shepherd does. Many churches remember the Good Shepherd on this Sunday of Easter, and the image fits the season.

And because He is risen, the Shepherd is alive to lead. He is not only a memory of sacrifice, but a present guide. If you feel lost or unsure of the way, He knows where you are. Speak to Him today the way a sheep might call to its shepherd. Tell Him where you need guidance, protection, or rest. He will not run. He stays with those who belong to Him.
