Jesus calls us back to the love we started with, and He gives us the way.
“Nevertheless I have somewhat against thee, because thou hast left thy first love. Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen, and repent, and do the first works; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will remove thy candlestick out of his place, except thou repent.”Revelation 2:4-5 (KJV)
What does “First love” mean in Revelation 2:4-5?
Jesus speaks to the church in Ephesus, which had many strengths but had lost the warmth of its first love. He gives three steps: remember, repent, and do the first works.
Going deeper
Jesus praises the Ephesian church for its hard work and its stand for truth. Then He says something that must have stung: I have somewhat against thee, because thou hast left thy first love. It is possible to be busy for God and cool toward Him at the same time. Activity can continue long after affection fades. Jesus does not ignore it. He names it, because He cares about the relationship more than the record of service.
The remedy has three parts. Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen. Repent. And do the first works. Remembering brings the early days back into view: the joy, the wonder, the simple prayers. Repenting turns us back toward Him. Doing the first works means returning to the plain habits of love, such as prayer, kindness, and time in His word. If your faith has become routine, start with one of these steps today, and let love lead again.
