What does “Finishing well” mean in 2 Timothy 4:7?

Paul wrote these words near the end of his life. He uses the images of a fight and a race, saying he has stayed in the contest and kept the faith to the end.

Paul writes, I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith. He does not say he had an easy life or that he never failed. He says he stayed in the fight, ran the course to its end, and held on to the faith. Those three phrases describe a life of perseverance. What mattered most was not the achievements but the faithfulness, all the way to the finish.

This verse can be a goal for each of us. We do not know how long our course will be. The question is whether we are running it faithfully today. Ask what would help you keep the faith in this season. It might be regular prayer, fellowship with other believers, or a fresh commitment to something you had let slip. Take one step. Finishing well is made of many faithful days, one after another. Faithfulness today is the best preparation for finishing well.
