God's mercies are not used up. They are new every morning.
“It is of the LORD’s mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.”Lamentations 3:22-23 (KJV)
What does “Faithfulness” mean in Lamentations 3:22-23?
The word mercies translates the Hebrew chesed, God's steadfast, loyal love. Compassions carries the idea of the tender care a parent has for a child.
Going deeper
Lamentations was written in the sorrow that followed the fall of Jerusalem. The writer has lost almost everything, and he says so honestly. Then, in the middle of the grief, he remembers something and finds hope: the LORD's love has not run out. This is one of the great turns in Scripture, and it happens without the circumstances changing at all. Hope did not arrive because the pain ended, but because he chose to remember.
Advent is a season of remembering faithfulness. Every promise that led to Bethlehem was kept because God is faithful. Mercies that are new every morning mean you never begin a day in debt. Whatever you did yesterday, or whatever was done to you, this morning comes with fresh mercy. You can begin again. Thank God today for one way He has been faithful to you in the past year, and let that memory strengthen your trust for the days ahead.
