When we move toward God, He moves toward us.
“Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded.”James 4:8 (KJV)
What does “Draw near” mean in James 4:8?
James writes to believers who had drifted into quarrels and divided loyalties. The promise is simple and personal: those who come close to God will find that He comes close to them.
Going deeper
James does not describe a God who is hard to reach. He says, Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. The first step is ours, and the response is certain. Drawing near is not a ritual for the perfect. It is what a person does who has wandered and wants to come home. Prayer, Scripture, honest confession, and simple attention are all ways of moving toward Him. Each small step is met with something greater than we offered.
Notice that the verse comes in the middle of a call to humble ourselves and turn away from a divided heart. Drawing near and turning from what divides us belong together. You may feel far from God today, for reasons you understand or not. Do not wait to feel close before you begin. Take one step now: read a psalm, say a plain prayer, or sit quietly for five minutes. He has promised to answer, and He keeps His word.
