Followers of Jesus are meant to be seen, not hidden, so that others can find their way.

What does “City on a hill” mean in Matthew 5:14?
In the hills of Galilee, a town built on high ground could be seen from far away, especially at night when its lamps were lit. Jesus says His followers are like that: a visible light to those around them.

Jesus says, ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. He is not giving a command, but a description. Light does its work simply by being visible. A city on a hill is a landmark for travelers who are trying to find their way. In the same way, a life shaped by Christ is a reference point for people who are lost, tired, or searching.
That can be intimidating, since it means people are watching. But it is also freeing. We do not have to force it. We simply have to live truthfully in the places God has put us, and let our light be seen. Ask what would make your home, workplace, or neighborhood a little easier to find God in. It might be kindness, honesty, or a willingness to help. You are already a light, so do not hide it under a basket.
