God's work is done by His Spirit, not by our might or power.

What does “By My Spirit” mean in Zechariah 4:6?
God speaks this word to Zerubbabel, who was leading the rebuilding of the temple against great opposition. It reminds him that the work depends on God's Spirit and not on human strength.
Going deeper
The returned exiles faced a huge task and strong resistance. Zerubbabel was leading the effort to rebuild the temple, and he had few resources. Then God sent a message through Zechariah: not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the LORD of hosts. The word is not meant to discourage human effort. It is meant to relocate the source. Their strength would never be enough, but God's Spirit was.
This is a fitting word for the last day before Pentecost. We are about to remember how the Holy Spirit came in power on the church. If you are facing a task that feels too big for you, this verse is for you. Do your part faithfully, and depend on the Spirit for the rest. Ask Him today for the strength you cannot supply, and expect Him to work in ways that surpass what you could do alone.
