We represent Christ to the world, inviting people to be reconciled to God.
“Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ’s stead, be ye reconciled to God.”2 Corinthians 5:20 (KJV)
What does “Ambassadors” mean in 2 Corinthians 5:20?
An ambassador speaks for a king in a foreign land and carries his message and authority. Paul says believers speak for Christ, and that the message is an appeal to be reconciled to God.
Going deeper
Paul says, now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us. It is a striking picture. An ambassador does not speak for himself. He speaks for the ruler who sent him, and he carries that ruler's message with care. Paul says that when believers speak of Christ, it is as if God Himself is making the appeal. The message is: be ye reconciled to God.
Notice the tone. Beseech means to plead, to appeal earnestly. God is not shouting at people from a distance. He is inviting them, warmly, to come home. That should shape how we speak of our faith: with respect, gentleness, and warmth, not with pressure or pride. Think of someone in your life who may not know that God wants to be reconciled with them. Ask God for one opportunity this week to be His ambassador with kindness and honesty.
