Faith, hope, and love last, and the greatest of these is love.

What does “Greatest” mean in 1 Corinthians 13:13?
The King James word charity translates the Greek agape, the self-giving love described throughout this chapter. Paul places it above even faith and hope.
Going deeper
Paul's famous chapter on love sits in the middle of his teaching about spiritual gifts, and it is no accident. Right after listing the gifts, he says that without love they amount to nothing. Then he closes the chapter: now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity. Gifts will pass, but these three remain. And of the three, love is the greatest.
This is a fitting way to end Pentecost week. The Spirit's power is real, but its aim is love. Every gift, every sermon, every act of service is meant to serve it. As you look ahead, ask what would change if you measured your life by love. Choose one person to love in a concrete way this week. It could be a phone call, a meal, or forgiveness. The Spirit produces love in His people, and love is the surest sign that He is at work.
