The Spirit gives many different gifts, and each one is given for the good of all.
“Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. And there are differences of administrations, but the same Lord. And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which worketh all in all. But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal.”1 Corinthians 12:4-7 (KJV)
What does “Many gifts” mean in 1 Corinthians 12:4-7?
Paul lists three kinds of variety: gifts, ways of serving, and kinds of working. Behind all of it stands the same Spirit, the same Lord, and the same God.
Going deeper
The Corinthian church was proud of certain gifts and quick to compare. Paul reminds them that variety is by design: now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. And there are differences of administrations, but the same Lord. And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which worketh all in all. Three Persons are named, and one purpose runs through them all. Difference is not division.
Then comes the key: the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal. Every believer receives something, and it is given for the common good, not for private display. Ask what the Spirit has given you, and how it could help someone this week. Do not compare it to another's. Celebrate what others have been given, too. A church is like a body, and it needs every part. Your gift is needed. Every person in the room matters.
