The Shepherd leads us to rest and restores our souls.
“He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.”Psalm 23:2-3 (KJV)
What does “Still waters” mean in Psalm 23:2-3?
The Hebrew for still waters describes waters of resting places, calm and safe for the flock to drink. Restoreth means He brings back, refreshing what has been worn down.

Sheep will not lie down if they are afraid, hungry, or unsettled, and a good shepherd makes sure they are calm before they rest. David says that the LORD maketh me to lie down in green pastures and leadeth me beside the still waters. Notice the verbs: He makes, He leads. Rest is something the Shepherd provides, not something we produce. Then David adds: he restoreth my soul, and leads me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.
Some of us struggle to rest because we believe everything depends on us. This psalm invites us to trust the Shepherd to provide. Consider one way you could create real rest today: a short walk, a quiet meal, ten minutes without your phone. Then invite Him to restore your soul in that space. Restoration is a gift, and it often begins when we stop striving long enough to receive it.
