What does “Valley” mean in Psalm 23:4?

The phrase valley of the shadow of death can also be read as a valley of deep darkness. David says that he will fear no evil, not because the valley is safe, but because the LORD is with him.

In the first three verses of the psalm, the Shepherd leads us beside quiet waters. Then, without warning, the scene changes. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil. David does not say that valleys will not come. He says that we walk through them, and that we do not walk alone. The pronoun changes from he to thou. David stops talking about God and starts talking to Him: for thou art with me.

The rod and staff mentioned in the verse were tools for guiding and protecting. They comforted the sheep because they meant the shepherd was close. If you are in a valley right now, whether it is grief, illness, or fear, this verse is for you. Speak to Him directly, as David did. Say, You are with me. You may not feel it, but say it anyway, and ask Him to make it real to you. The valley has an end, and He walks through it beside you.
