Jeremiah wrote to exiles living in Babylon, a city that was not their home. God told them to work for its peace and pray for it, because their own welfare was tied to its welfare.

God told the exiles, seek the peace of the city whither I have caused you to be carried away captives, and pray unto the LORD for it: for in the peace thereof shall ye have peace. This was surprising. They were far from home and might have wanted to withdraw. Instead, God told them to settle in and seek the good of their neighbors. They were to be a blessing in the place where they were.

That applies to us wherever we live. Seek the peace of your city, meaning its welfare, safety, and wellbeing. Pray for it by name. Look for ways to contribute: volunteer, support local schools, care for neighbors, and take part in community life. Ask what would make your neighborhood a better place, and take a small step. Serving the world often begins with serving the place where God has planted us. Even small steps, taken faithfully, can make a neighborhood better and bring you closer to the people around you.
