What does “Be alert” mean in 1 Peter 5:8?

Peter writes to believers who were suffering. He asks them to be sober, meaning clear-headed, and vigilant, meaning awake, since the devil actively looks for those he can harm.

Peter warns, Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour. It is a sober picture. The enemy is real and active. But notice the instruction: be sober and vigilant. Peter is not asking us to be terrified. He is asking us to be awake and clear-headed. A watchful person is harder to catch off guard.

Alertness means noticing what pulls us away from God: habits, moods, situations, or people that tend to lead us astray. It also means keeping close to others who can help. The verse after this says to resist him, standing firm in faith. Take an honest look at where you are most vulnerable and put a guard around it. Pray for clarity of mind, and stay close to Christ and to trusted friends. Ask a trusted friend to watch with you, since alertness is easier together. Pray for clear eyes each morning, and thank God for His protection.
