What does “Sleep in peace” mean in Psalm 4:8?
David wrote this psalm during a time of trouble, yet he ends with calm. His peace does not come from having no enemies but from knowing God makes him dwell in safety.

David ends his evening psalm with this line: I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, LORD, only makest me dwell in safety. The word only is worth noting. He does not trust in guards, plans, or his own strength. His safety comes from the LORD alone. That allows him to do something many anxious people find difficult: lie down and sleep. Peaceful sleep is a sign of trust.
If worry keeps you awake, try this verse as a bedtime prayer. Before you sleep, name the things on your mind and hand them over one by one. Then say David's words aloud. You may not fall asleep at once, but you are placing the night in God's hands. Rest is an act of faith, an admission that the world does not depend on us staying awake to run it. Peaceful rest is a gift He gives to those who trust Him, and it renews us for the next day.
