Storing up God's word in the heart helps us stay true to Him.
“Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.”Psalm 119:11 (KJV)
What does “Hidden word” mean in Psalm 119:11?
The verb hid means to store up or treasure, as one would keep something valuable in a safe place. The psalmist says this is a defense against sin.
Going deeper
The psalmist says, Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee. The picture is of treasure kept safe. When God's word is stored in the heart, it is available in the moment of temptation, doubt, or fear. We do not have to go looking for a Bible. The verses are already within us. The purpose is stated plainly: so that we may live in a way that honors God.
Memorizing Scripture may feel old-fashioned, but it is powerful. You do not need to memorize long passages. Start with one verse a week. Write it on a card, place it where you will see it, and say it aloud a few times each day. Choose a verse that speaks to a struggle you face. Over months, you will build a store of words to draw on, and they will shape how you think and act.
Reflect
Which verse could you hide in your heart this week, and where will you keep it in view?
Pray
Lord, I want to hide Your word in my heart. Help me to store it up, and let it keep me close to You. In Jesus' name, amen.
