James defines pure religion in practical terms: care for orphans and widows in their trouble, and staying unspotted from the world. The word visit means to look after and care for, not just drop in.

Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world. James is not dismissing worship or doctrine. He is showing what real faith looks like when it is lived out. In his world, orphans and widows had no legal protection and often no income. Caring for them was the clearest sign of a heart shaped by God.
Today, the vulnerable are still around us: children in foster care, single parents under strain, elderly people living alone. There are two parts to this verse. One is outward care, and the other is inward integrity. Both belong together. Ask yourself who in your community is in affliction and unnoticed. Choose one way to visit them, with a meal, a call, or an offer of practical help. This kind of faith is very pleasing to God.
