Kindness to the poor is treated by God as a loan to Him.

What does “The Poor” mean in Proverbs 19:17?
The Hebrew word for hath pity means to show favor and grace. The verse says that when we help the poor, we are lending to the LORD, and He will repay.
Going deeper
This is a striking way to describe generosity. God does not need our money, yet He counts what we give to the poor as something given to Him. He takes it personally. The verse also says that He will repay, which reminds us that God notices and rewards kindness, though not always in the way or time we expect. The reward is His to give, and it may be as simple as joy and the knowledge that we have served Him.
It is easy to keep a distance from poverty, but the Bible repeatedly draws us near. Giving to the poor can be as simple as supporting a local ministry, buying a meal for someone, or paying attention to those in need at work or church. Consider what you could give this week, out of what you have. Ask God to show you where to give, and do it with confidence that He sees and values every act of mercy.
