What does “Peace” mean in Philippians 4:7?
The Greek eirene echoes the Hebrew shalom, meaning wholeness and well-being, not just the absence of trouble. The word for keep is phroureo, a military term for a garrison posted to guard a city.

Paul wrote this from prison, so his peace did not depend on his circumstances. It follows a command in verse 6 to bring everything to God in prayer with thanksgiving. The sequence matters: we pray, and God's peace stands guard over our hearts and thoughts. It passes understanding because it does not make sense on paper. It is given, not figured out.
