Scripture is real food. We live on God's word, not on bread alone.
“But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.”Matthew 4:4 (KJV)
What does “Written” mean in Matthew 4:4?
Jesus is quoting Deuteronomy 8:3, spoken to Israel in their own wilderness years. The verse says that people live by words God keeps on speaking.
Going deeper
The tempter's first move came when Jesus was hungry, and it was reasonable on the surface: turn stones into bread. Jesus answers with Scripture, and He begins with the words it is written. He does not argue from His own power. He stands on what God has already said. That is a model for us. When we are tempted, we do not have to invent a defense. We can reach for words we have already stored up.
Notice too what He says about bread. Bread matters, and He does not pretend otherwise. But there is a deeper hunger that only God's word can satisfy. Lent is a good season to feed that hunger on purpose. Choose one short passage to read each morning, and learn a single verse by heart this week. When temptation comes, you will have something firm to stand on, just as Jesus did. Words that are stored up in advance are available when we need them most.
