What does “Weeping together” mean in Romans 12:15?

Paul gives two short commands that mirror each other: rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep. Both call for us to enter another person's experience.

It is easier to do one of these than the other. Some people are good at comforting the grieving but find it hard to celebrate someone else's success, especially when they are struggling themselves. Others share joy easily but avoid the discomfort of another's pain. Paul asks for both: rejoice with them that do rejoice, and weep with them that weep. Both require setting aside our own concerns for a moment and entering someone else's world.

Sharing another person's feelings does not mean fixing them. Often the most helpful thing is to be present. Sit with someone who is grieving. Cheer with someone who has good news. Think of two people in your life right now, one who is celebrating and one who is hurting. Reach out to each this week. A simple message that says, I am glad with you, or I am with you in this, tells them they are not alone.
